How the numbers were produced
On October 7, 2026 we searched Google Maps for 15 terms such as "plumber" or "roofing contractor" in each of 30 US cities. We retrieved up to 100 results per search through the DataForSEO Google Maps API. We counted only profiles whose Google category fits the trade. A result for "painter" that is listed as an art studio does not count. Depending on the trade, between 45 percent (junk removal) and 98 percent (HVAC and roofing) of the results were counted.
Each profile counts once per city and trade, so the 38,091 profiles belong to 37,402 different businesses. A business found in two cities counts in each, and so does a business listed under two trades (for example HVAC and plumbing). Positions are counted among the matching profiles only: the first three results are the first three profiles that fit the trade, and other Maps results in between are skipped.
Some category choices are judgment calls. Besides the plain trade name we counted "Electrical installation service" as electrical; "Air conditioning contractor", "Air conditioning repair service", "Heating contractor" and "Furnace repair service" as HVAC; "Debris removal service" as junk removal; "Cleaning service" as house cleaning; "Moving and storage service" as moving; "Painting" as painting; "Landscape designer", "Gardener" and "Lawn care service" as landscaping; "Garage door supplier" as garage door repair; and "Emergency locksmith service" as locksmith.
Landscape architects, garbage collection and waste management services, electrical repair shops, key duplication services and supply stores do not count. The 30 cities are a selection, not a ranking of the 30 largest: large metros plus Charleston, Columbia, Savannah and Mobile.
The median is the middle value: half of the profiles have more reviews, half fewer. Percentages are rounded to whole numbers. Where a trade has fewer than 30 profiles in a city, we show no value for that city. That affects four of 450 city and trade combinations.
What we did not measure: the order of results is for a search from the city's location, and anyone searching from their own location sees a different list. The numbers are a snapshot of one day. Only reviews on Google are counted, not other review sites. "No website link" means that the profile shows no website, not that the business has none. These numbers cannot show why a business ranks where it does.
How many reviews a contractor has
Moving companies (120) and locksmiths (104) lead by a wide margin. More than half of the moving profiles (55 percent) have 100 reviews or more. So do 51 percent of locksmith profiles and 44 percent of plumbing profiles. At the other end are handyman (10), electrical and landscaping (16 each) and painting (17).
The stars hardly differ: the median is between 4.8 and 5.0 in every trade.
How many contractors have fewer than 10 reviews
In handyman, pest control and tree service, 15, 15 and 11 percent of profiles have no review at all. In electrical it is 10 percent, and 40 percent have fewer than 10.
Do the top results have more reviews
In plumbing, the first three results have a median of 250.5 reviews against 110 for places 4 to 20. Tree service is the reverse: 8 reviews in the first three results against 44 for places 4 to 20. The number of reviews therefore does not explain every position in the list.
Google names three main factors for local results: relevance, distance and how well-known a business is. The number of reviews is one of the signals for how well-known a business is (Google Business Profile Help: Tips to improve your local ranking).
The same trade looks different by city
The median for plumbers is 201.5 reviews in Denver and 21 in Los Angeles. Electricians have 34.5 in Atlanta and 3 in both Boston and San Francisco. HVAC runs from 168 in San Antonio to 6 in Miami. All 15 trades in all 30 cities are in the lookup above and in the CSV file.
Profiles without a website link
Among handyman profiles, 39 percent link no website, among electrical 30 percent and among HVAC 29 percent. Among moving companies it is 10 percent.
By trade cluster
We also grouped the 15 trades into five clusters. Here a business listed under two trades of the same cluster counts only once per city. An example is a company found both as a plumber and as an HVAC contractor. Positions are not compared here, because the order of results does not combine across trades.
For contractors
How your own profile compares, and how to close the gap within Google's rules, is in how many Google reviews a contractor needs. For a routine that crews can follow, see how to get more Google reviews. Templates for answering are in how to respond to a negative Google review, and what to do about fakes is in how to remove fake Google reviews.
