How to get plumbing leads: every channel compared, with real demand data
Updated: October 01, 2026
Search "plumbing leads" and most results sell you leads. Buying is one way, and sometimes the fastest. But most plumbing work starts with a homeowner who has a clogged drain, a leak or no hot water and searches for a plumber on their own. This guide compares every way a plumbing company gets in front of that homeowner, what each costs and who owns the customer afterwards. First, a number no lead seller shows you: how often homeowners in your city search for a plumber themselves.
How often homeowners search for a plumber
The table shows monthly Google searches for "plumber", "plumbing company" and "water heater repair" together with the city name, plus the lowest and highest average cost per click advertisers paid across the three terms. These are Google Ads keyword averages, pulled on October 1, 2026 through the DataForSEO API. Google rounds them, so read them as estimates, not counts. Searches with a neighborhood, a ZIP code or a specific problem ("burst pipe", "drain cleaning") come on top and are not included.
| City | Searches per month | Cost per ad click |
|---|---|---|
| Houston | 7,670 | $13.96–$35.53 |
| Austin | 7,450 | $32.23–$54.82 |
| New York | 6,790 | $1.83–$13.49 |
| San Diego | 6,670 | $13.44–$64.44 |
| Phoenix | 6,510 | $13.34–$107.15 |
| Chicago | 6,440 | $14.78–$28.34 |
| Los Angeles | 5,800 | $9.13–$36.03 |
| Dallas | 5,510 | $14.62–$35.66 |
| San Antonio | 5,470 | $30.59–$82.52 |
| Charlotte | 4,130 | $13.77–$39.72 |
| Fort Worth | 4,070 | $9.61–$80.02 |
| Columbus | 4,060 | $28.67–$47.88 |
| Philadelphia | 3,940 | $28.79–$88.76 |
| San Jose | 3,590 | $9.38–$39.86 |
| Jacksonville | 3,450 | $25.13–$45.34 |
Every one of these searches is a homeowner looking for a plumber right now. The company that shows up gets the call directly, with no fee per lead.
One business per trade per metro. Ask whether yours is open
The channels compared
| Channel | What it costs | The catch | Who owns the customer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead platforms (Thumbtack, Angi) | a fee per lead | you pay even when the homeowner hires someone else | shared: the homeowner can compare several pros |
| Lead sellers and pay-per-call | a fee per lead or call | ask whether a lead is sold once or to several plumbers | depends on the seller |
| Google Local Services Ads | a fee per lead | Google's screening first; you compete with other verified pros | you |
| Google search ads | a fee per click | costs start with the first click, whether or not anyone calls | you |
| Your Google Business Profile and website | mostly time | months before it brings steady calls | you |
| An exclusive local lead site | a fee to the site owner | takes months to rank; one plumbing company per metro | you alone for your trade and metro |
Lead platforms. On Thumbtack you pay for leads: customers who reach out to you directly. Prices vary with the job, how many pros are available and your market, and you set your lead prices yourself (Thumbtack Help). Before you judge a platform by its price per lead, work out what one won job costs with our Thumbtack cost calculator. Angi charges per lead too, with each request going to several pros: Is Angi worth it?
Lead sellers and pay-per-call. Many of the results for "plumbing leads" are companies that sell leads or calls. The question that decides the value is whether a lead goes to you alone or to several plumbers at once. Get the answer, the price and the refund rules in writing.
Google Local Services Ads. You pay for leads, not clicks: the ad charges when a customer gets in touch through it, as calls or messages (Local Services Help). Google describes them as pay-per-lead listings for verified local service providers that appear at the top of the page with a Google Verified badge (Google Business). The checks come first, so plan for the onboarding time.
Google search ads. Standard Google Ads are pay-per-click (Google Business). The cost-per-click column in the table shows what advertisers paid per click on these searches in each city. Divide your budget by that number and you know how many clicks, not calls, it buys.
Your Google Business Profile and website. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). For plumbing, a separate page for each main job (drain cleaning, water heaters, leak repair, repiping) and each area you serve helps with relevance. Reviews that mention the job and the town help with prominence. How to build reviews within Google's rules: how contractors get more Google reviews.
An exclusive local lead site. A site built for one metro and one trade, where every enquiry goes to a single plumbing company. You don't share the homeowner with competitors. The trade-off: a new site takes months to rank, so it works alongside paid channels at first, not instead of them.
Which mix makes sense
- Starting out or filling a gap now: paid channels, measured by cost per won job, not per lead.
- Steady base: a complete Google Business Profile with reviews, and a website with a page for each service. It costs time, not fees.
- Growing in one metro: an exclusive source, so the leads you build up are yours alone.
Track where every job you win came from. After three months, compare the cost per won job by channel and shift the budget toward what wins.
The same comparison for other trades: roofing, HVAC, electrical, junk removal and water damage. All 10 trades side by side: contractor leads by trade.
